YOUNG PEOPLE'S ARTS EVENTS

Tie-dyed textile design The idea behind this project came from a number of reports showing the interest young people have in the arts and the environment. Ross Creative Learning Centre has opened doors for the youth in Ross-on-Wye and its surrounding Parishes, by joining together elements of the arts and environmental issues. LEADER+ funding for the project began in spring 2003.

Turning an old sports youth centre in central Ross into a welcoming environment for young arts enthusiasts is no easy, or cheap, job, but changes being made include a suitable performing space, i.e. a 200-250 seat auditorium; a computer facility with Internet access, graphic, photographic and moving image software; a coffee bar and meeting/social room; an exhibition space with art studios; and a soundproofed music rehearsal and recording space.

The range of events inspired from the attending youths (not adult employees) include:

    Textile design made during workshops
  • Song writing
  • Composition and performance of a Musical
  • Recycled fashion show
  • Music/instrument workshops
  • Young people's art gallery
  • Making recycled musical instruments

The environmental themes are incorporated into the arts genres through the use of a water and river theme, for example linking with the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty's (AONB) Wye Valley Walk, and by placing sculptures along the river Wye at strategic points. These sculptures use the skills that have been learnt through the many scrap-metal workshops that take place at the Creative Learning Centre.
