PEMBRIDGE MARKET HALL
Another project by the Pembridge Amenity Trust, bringing the community focus onto the village's Market Hall; a site of restoration and conservation.
The Market Hall underwent dendro-dating (tree ring dating) in 2002, and was estimated to be built between 1502 and 1538, making it possibly the oldest market hall still to be in regular use in the country. Since 1967 it has been a Grade II* listed building. No work has been done on the building since 1927, so its state of repair has been designated as urgent.
The work to be carried out, taking place in the first half of 2005, is:
- Strip the roof, re-use any sound tiles
- Rafters will be inspected, repaired, and replaced if required
- Repairs to the timber posts will only be made to areas that threaten the structural integrity of the hall
- Repair or reinstate areas of the original earth floor
- Add a cobbled stone perimeter to the hall, to encourage rainwater run-off
This project intends to give the public lots of information about the hall, its history, the process of restoration and conservation, through many different media. These are to include:
- Interpretive boards
- Leaflets (available from local visitor centres and tourist information centres)
- The Pembridge Amenity Trust website
- A video (available in local libraries and lodged at the British Museum)
- Educational material for schools
- Public presentations by Trevor Hewett (Architect) and Duncan James (local architectural historian)
