OBJECTIVE 1
To enhance the distinctiveness of the countryside, including cultural, historic and natural environment
Priority Themes
- To encourage heritage projects that explore the history and distinctiveness of the area : e.g. Oral history project that looks into the changing role of the rivers in the county.
- Undertake surveys to establish the extent of ecologically valuable habitats and encourage moves to more sustainable management : e.g. Facilitate local communities to undertake local audits of habitats.
OBJECTIVE 2
To use environmental and cultural resources sensitively and sustainably for economic and recreational purposes
Priority Themes
- Develop river features and associated visitor attractions while protecting and enhancing the natural and historic environment e.g. Development and maintenance of riverside walks and locations
- Support the sustainability of the tourism industry through business development and marketing e.g. Develop a directory of local skills and products
- For festivals and events to use the river and water theme, celebrating their place in community life e.g. Festival using arts, crafts, performance and music to focus on a river and water theme
- To promote the production of environmentally benign and locally distinctive products e.g. Environmental training for farmers
OBJECTIVE 3
To increase environmental knowledge, awareness and skills among residents and visitorsPriority Themes
- Raise awareness of the heritage and cultural aspects of the rivers, flood plains and valleys e.g. Undertake historical assessment as basis for local education and promotion
- To engage local people, communities in the process of change e.g. Seminars on sustainable flood management
- To promote the use of the arts in making links between local people/visitors and the river environment e.g. Showcase artwork on river themes in galleries and libraries
OBJECTIVE 4
To revitalise natural processes inherent in the county's river and floodplain systems
Priority Themes
- To promote the proper management of the river valleys and flood plains e.g. Promote the links between water consumption and the health of the rivers and associated wetlands
- To monitor the effects of change with river catchments e.g. Develop indicators with the local community to help establish how communities monitor change
- To encourage sound water resource management e.g. Support schemes that encourage sound water management that reduces flooding risk, low flows, over abstraction, etc.
- To increase knowledge of the environmental systems and resources upon which the river catchment character depends e.g. Develop ecological surveys
